Psychosocial recovery coaching is one of the most valuable supports available to NDIS participants living with mental health conditions. But with the recent changes to the NDIS, many people have questions about whether this support has been affected. Here is a clear overview.
What Is Psychosocial Recovery Coaching?
Psychosocial recovery coaching is a capacity building support under the NDIS. It is specifically designed for participants whose disability arises from a mental health condition — what is known as a psychosocial disability. A recovery coach works alongside you to:
- Help you build skills to manage your day-to-day life
- Support you in working towards your NDIS goals
- Connect you with other services and supports
- Build your confidence and resilience over time
- Work collaboratively with your other support team members
Recovery coaching is different from support coordination, which focuses on helping you navigate and implement your NDIS plan. Both supports can often be funded together.
Changes Under the 2024 Reforms
Psychosocial recovery coaching remains a funded NDIS support under the new legislation. In the PACE system, it now sits within a renamed category called ‘Support Coordination and Psychosocial Recovery Coaching’, which reflects how closely the two supports often work together.
Reporting requirements for recovery coaches have also been updated under PACE. The NDIA has introduced standardised reporting templates specifically for psychosocial recovery coaches. These templates are designed to capture consistent information and help planners prepare for check-ins and plan reassessments.
Who Qualifies for Recovery Coaching?
Recovery coaching is available to NDIS participants whose primary disability is psychosocial in nature — such as those living with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, severe depression or anxiety, or other mental health conditions that have a significant and ongoing impact on daily life. Your NDIA planner can discuss whether recovery coaching is appropriate for your plan.
